The missions team offers many volunteer opportunities for outreach in our community as a congregation. Many of these offer a chance for your to be actively involved with “hand’s on” work. These and other programs we also support financially.  There is something for everyone if you choose to be involved.

Backpack Buddies
Backpack Buddies is a community-wide program that provides a weekend bag of food for 650 at-risk elementary children. This volunteer program is currently in its 11th year and is supported by 25+ churches and civic groups. Our church packs and delivers about 100 bags of food to a school each week during the school year.

Trinity House Food Pantry
We have several volunteers who work three-hour shifts for 10:00am-1:00pm once a month helping staff Trinity House which is operated by Trinity Lutheran Church. They work alongside other volunteers to pack and hand out a monthly bag of groceries to those who meet the pantry guidelines.  Occasional food drives help support this important service.

Interfaith Shelter of Hope
This is an opportunity to volunteer for a shift at the homeless shelter where the mission is to “provide a safe p[ace for the guests to sleep from 9:00pm-7:00am each night”.  Our church provides volunteers each Thursday night, three hour shifts 8-11pm, 11-2am, 2-5am and 5-8am.  Typically, they volunteer once every three weeks depending on the number of overall volunteers.  Training is available for those interested.  The congregation here at First United Methodist also donate shelf stable foods that can easily be consumed without electricity, such as granola bars, canned meats and bottled water.

Welcome Central
This is an organization with the goal of “helping you find the help you need.”  Volunteers assist clients who seek help getting through a maze of paperwork and phone calls in getting assistance. Clients are aided with issues such as housing, food, transportation as well as other needs.  Volunteers do a variety of work as needed in assisting clients.  Volunteer time is very flexible.

Samaritans Buffet
Our church provides on of the free community meals in Leavenworth.  We serve a meal to all who come the first Saturday of each month, and alternate fifth Saturday meals with another church. Volunteers plan, cook and serve a meal for over 400 people, both eat in and carry-out.

Camp Horizon
Each October, a group travels to Camp Horizon, a Methodist camp located near Arkansas City, Kansas to help close down the camp after their summer activities.  Bot skilled and unskilled tasks are completed during this 4-5 day trip.  This is a great chance for fellowship and service.

First Garden
You can partner with a community person during the growing season to raise  healthy food and build a new friendship with someone who might not otherwise have access to a garden spot or fresh vegetables. We have five raised garden beds available each year.

Council on Aging
We have done several projects for clients at Council on Aging. These are typically things like small home repair or building a ramp for someone who has limited access to the outside.

First Food
2017 is the first year we sponsored a summer food program impacting local children, families and seniors who live in Section 8 housing. We provided groceries for about 150 families on a weekly basis throughout the summer months when children have no access to programs such as school breakfast and lunch, or the weekend Backpack Buddies food.

Local Outreach
We also help with financial support to local organizations such as the Alliance Against Family Violence, Sisters of Charity, and Saint Vincent’s Clinic.
